No tricks, just treats

It seems that when you finally have the kids, it is de rigueur to post a few pics of them in their get-ups. So, I'm a little late to the party, as usual. I present, the last week in pictures:

The groundbreaking Dscf4040has finally begun on the new house, after almost two years. It has taken us that long to get the old one torn down! Unscrupuloous demolition guy ran off with our deposit...long story...

We took a 4 day (total) road trip to my Homecoming last weekend. Dscf4065Dscf4064This is how they were on the road, most of the time, since we timed the driving around their naps.

Not to be outdone by D, the girls were outfitted in my alma mater's colors, too.Dscf4068Dscf4069  No, that it is not me.

Then we picked out pumpkins.Dscf4050 The girls had to get a picture in the outfits my SIL, the ass, with 5 daughters of her own, bought. Hey inlaws, let me dress my own kids, you had your chance! Nic discovered that dead grass tastes kind of good.

My mom holds the girls in their costumes.Costumes This is one of the few that isn't blurry. First time they ever rode in a wagon, and they LOVED it.Dscf4084 (I think the headband is making Nic's ears stick out a little, but it just makes her look that much more elfen, I guess) Oh, and their Jack o' Lanterns.Dscf4103 I mangaged to carve both of them, very un-artistically, in 1/2 an hour, while Nic played in her exersaucer and Julia took a longer nap, than usual.

If you have a dachshund, its an unwritten rule that they have to be hot dogs for at least one Halloween in their lives.Dscf4085 This was their year. Of course, they didn't fit right, since dachshunds are notoriously barrel-chested.

The morning after, the girls seemed a little miffed that they were getting the same ol' Cheeri0s and bananas, instead of something from that Trick or Treat bucket over there.Dscf4095Dscf4097Julia_6

Go Tigers!

Well, we waited a long time to take our children to their first tailgate at D's alma mater. Saturday was that day. Here are the girls decked out in all their finest, Cheerleaderswith a cool ride to match! Yes, we are big dorks, here in the Mid-West, when it comes to football...Dscf3923Dscf3922Dscf3918

Also, since it was Labor Day weekend, we thought we better head to our pool, Dscf3931or miss out altogether, this year, since the only infant swim classes at the Y are during either of their two naps or around bedtime. In_the_poolThey had a blast, and Nicole couldn't believe she got to have TWO baths Sunday!Dscf3929

Fairies...

Those who know me, know that I practically endured all of those needle pricks and vaginal probes just so I could dress my kids up for Halloween. I've been making costumes for other people's kids (and myself) for years and one of my favorite things to do, was to pick through the costume box (which I inherited) at my grandmother's when I was a kid. Now, I have something new to add to the box: the girls have their first costumes. I didn't try to make them this year. Maybe next year. I couldn't have made these for what I paid for them, anyway. I had heard that infant costumes sell out quick, so I had to make a decision. Tulip FairyTulip_fairy and Sugar Plum FairySugar_plum_fairy it is. I can't wait to see them all dressed up. And also eat their candy.

Christmas in July

It was like Christmas morning around here today. The Phil & Ted's Sport came! Dscf3888They don't look thrilled, but I think they enjoyed their 6:00 a.m. stroll around the block in their jammies. The artist in me was torn between the lime or orange and Goth black. After conferring with Alex, who pointed out that the girls outfits will stand out better against black, we decided to be boring again. Plus, the black was a good deal on ebay. Brand new and I saved $60! I've been lusting after a Phil & Ted's E3 since last August. Then the Sport came out, even better than the E3. Dscf3889

They had their 6 month check up Friday and they are creeping up to average percentiles. Nicole was 15 pounds 5 1/4 ounces (35%) 25 1/2" long (40%) and Julia was 15 pounds 2 3/4 ounces (30%) and also was 25 1/2" long (40%). Nicole promptly threw up her Rotavirus vaccine all over the nurse. Oops...

In other news, my SIL is still an ass.

6 Months Old...where did the time go?

So, about that whole "having more time to blog" thing. Someone forgot to tell me that just when you think you're making progress, babies go and cut a tooth or reach some milestone that screws up their sleep. Times two, and well, yeah. Anyway, they're growing like weeds. I'm sure they're close to 16 pounds by now. I keep forgetting to weigh them. We'll find out next week at their check up. Size 2  P@mpers, and I had to put most of their 3-6 month clothes away, already. (sniff)

Julia, rolls over front to back, and back to front, from either side. She is also on the verge of crawling, see the pictures below.Dscf3839 Dscf3837_3She thinks solid foods are pretty good, as long as she can help the food in with her fingers, her way.Dscf3859 She has given up the pacifiers, and is very good at soothing herself to sleep. And she is a flirt! Hilarious...

Nicole is sitting up on her own, now, although I don't let her out of my arm's reach, yet. She can roll over front to back, but is still getting it down to a purposeful maneuver. She blows raspberries when she's mad, and she has found her "voice." Sometimes we can't believe the banshee-like screams than come out of her mouth. I'm having a little trouble throwing my MIL off the scent when we try to "explain" her white hair. Hee-hee. She thinks solid food is insulting, especially peaches (huh?!)Dscf3863 She loves her bumpy ball from T@rget.Dscf3856 Best $5 I ever spent! She also doeesn't think she needs naps, although two or three times a week, she surprises me with a two hour plus afternoon nap.

Two days ago, I pulled out their exer-saucers, and they could finally stand up in them. They have been having so much fun with their new toys. They are really starting to interact and notice each other and the animals, too.Dscf3836

We took the girls on a 2 day road trip to Colorado in June, and we have come to the realization that another family vacation is several years down the road. Too bad I didn't get to see many friends. It was all business for D. The funniest picture from the whole trip illustrates Julia's fascination with beer bottles.Dscf3719_2 She was the same way at my cousin's wedding last week. Like mother like daughter, I guess...

We went to Pridefest to see their honorary surro-mommies, K and C at the booth they set up. They wore their swimsuits for the first time,Dscf3791 but didn't wade in the park's wading pool because it kept raining. Had to take the crappy Kolcr@ft stroller because I finally wore out the wheels on the Snap-n-go. Time to order the Ph!l and Ted's Sport, I guess.

All that walking with the snap-n-go (which I loved, by the way) combined with weight gain, and repetitive rocking/gliding with my right foot, have given me plantar's fasciitis. New fun with the forty-year old bod. So, the walking has basically stopped, too hot anyway, and I look pregnant again.

D and I actually manage to have dinner together every night now because we put the girls to bed between 6 and 6:30.

Our daily routine:

4:30-5:00 a.m. Babies wake up for a 4 oz. bottle, then back to bed

6:00-6:30 Mom & Dad wake up, feed cats and dogs, make coffee, eat breakfast and try to shower

6:30-8:00 Babies wake up, we walk outside for a few minutes to "set their clocks," eat a few teaspoons of oatmeal or barley with a little applesauce and another "fruit of the day." Clean up, change into play clothes, play a little

8:00 Have a 3 or 4 oz. bottle

8:30 Hopefully take a morning nap of at least an hour

9:30-12:00 Play, have another 3 or 4 oz bottle, possibly run an errand or go to grandma's for the day if its Wednesday (mom's "day off")

12:00-2:00 p.m. Hopefully take an afternoon nap of at least an hour

2:00-3:30 Play, have another 3 or 4 oz bottle

3:30-4:30 Third nap or "crap" as I call them, but definitely needed, still. Usually 20 to 40 minutes

4:00-4:30 Have a 2 oz bottle to "take the edge off"

5:15 Have some rice cereal with a little applesauce and the vegie of the day (yes, they make trays  for Bumbos now, cool, huh?)Dscf3861

5:30 Have a bath, jammies on, and have a 6 oz bottle of almost 4 month old frozen breastmilk that we are trying to use up

6:00-6:30 Go to their seperate cribs, Julia in the basement (sniff) and Nicole in the nursery (Nicole used to be the better sleeper, now they are pretty even, but still wake each other in the night)

6:30-9:30 Mom and Dad eat dinner, try to keep their Netfl!x account going, wash friggin' Dr. Br0wn's bottles, pay bills etc. (insert blogging time here)

9:30 Mom and Dad go to bed

12:00 a.m. Babies wake up at different times for a 6 oz bottle. Babies are "assigned" each night. Sometimes we get lucky with no wake-up and sometimes we don't

4:30-5:00 a.m. We start the process all over again and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Coming soon, the new house is finally going to be built. Met with the architect last week and the builder again this week.

One year ago today...

One year ago today, we arrrived in South Africa for a donor egg cycle I was sure would fail. In the next room, napping, at the same time, (thank you Dr. Ferber) is the proof that it didn't. The last four months have not been easy. Twins and colic are hard are their own, but together? Well, lets just say, we all came out alive on the other end, and my name isn't in the paper. I'm sorry I haven't updated. Things are so much better now, and they are starting to develop an eating/sleeping/playing/pooping pattern. And they are FUN! Cute, too. Dscf3705We paid extra for that. I hope to have more time to blog if anyone is still interested in reading. We are even talking about trying again in South Africa next summer. Did I just type that!? Well, we'll see how my back holds up. In the meantime, here is the latest picture of my little dreams come true, at 4 months, 1 week, sitting in their South African Bumbo seats. Julia on the left is 12 pounds 13 ounces as of yesterday, and Nicole is 13 pounds even. (She caught up!)

One month...or, the best Valentine's Day ever

I can't believe its been a month already. I don't think I'll ever have time to blog again! Until I do, I thought I'd share another picture or two. I owe you a birth story next. That ought to be a short post...

THIS is why we do it:

Much better than last year's Valentine's Day (or the year before, for that matter):Dscf3490_1

Another peek...

Yesterday was 7 weeks 5 days

I had my first perinatal office visit, yesterday. Here's the play-by-play: Weight. I've gained three pounds since the end of the first week of estrogen, May 18th. Not bad, considering it felt more like 13 pounds. Age. Apparently, I am now old. Today, I have to collect all of my urine in a special potty, pour it into a brown, hazardous waste materials jug (stored in the fridge, ewww!) and deliver it to the lab tomorrow. Since none of my young friends have ever heard of this, I assume it is an old lady thing. I think they are checking for total protein and creatinine clearance. Maybe I had a bad urine sample yesterday, that prompted this? Anyway, it takes some juggling when you have to do other things, that's all I'm saying. Also, tomorrow, I have to do the one hour glucose tolerance test. I chalk this up to age, as well, since nobody I know has ever done this at 8 weeks. I've been carbo-loading lately, but sweets haven't interested me, so I think I'll pass. Maybe I'll have an omelette in the morning. I also have to have a baseline blood draw, where they check liver function, electrolytes, and communicable diseases, among other things.

The scary part about the visit was that she wants me to seriously consider weaning off the Lovenox at 12 weeks. She feels that it is too big of a gun for me, since I'm heterozygous MTHFR. I was in such shock at the time, with DBT's dancing in my brain, that I didn't correct her, and tell her I'm compound herterozygous MTHFR. One copy of each mutation, the second most dangerous kind. I may have to get a second opinion about this. She would like a medical reference from my US RE, which would be complicated to get, to say the least. All I know, is that he had said, if my homocysteine level had been over 10 he would have me start the Lovenox 6 weeks prior to conception, all through pregnancy, stopping for a period of time around my due date, for the chance of c-section, and resuming for 6 weeks post-partum.

Granted, I did "doctor shop" a little with hemadoc to get enough to start 2 weeks prior to the cycle (my compromise), since Dr. L in SA, would only let me start it the night before embryo transfer, but even he was on board with me doing it, regardless of my homocysteine level. Although, I think he would have stopped me at 12 weeks, too. Who to believe? The sneaky thing on my part, is that my homocysteine levels were 8 and 9, the two times I had it tested, so the US RE wouldn't have put me on it in the first place since it wasn't 10. Although it obviously varies. My reasoning was it was borderline, and the peri, hemadoc, and Dr.L in SA all agreed I should take it for at least 12 weeks. I know its confusing, I'm confused, hence the doctor shopping, or second opinions, as I prefer to call them...I just don't want any clots killing my babies (or me, for that matter!) Can you imagine the hell to pay, if that happens??

The fun part, yesterday, was getting another ultrasound. I graduated to abdominal, so they were a little fuzzier, but they looked like ying and yang, tucked up there. One looked like it was sitting on its rump reading a book. Maybe because the image was fuzzier, the heartbeats seemed easier to see, too. I will never get tired of ultrasounds. So, besides tomorrows labs, I have another office visit (and hopefully bonus ultrasound) on the 24th, and a high resolution ultrasound on the 28th.

While we were at the hospital, we visited D's second cousin, who gave birth to triplets on Sunday. They were natural, and all girls. All were almost 4 pounds and doing well, considering they were 32 weeks. Mom was feeling a little better, but was under observation, because of her pre-eclampsia. Nice to see the level of care was good there, though.

The basement is almost framed and the electrician starts next Wednesday. Getting there.

Bogo, or who I like to refer to as, "Tertia and Paul"

7 weeks 2 days

Two heartbeats! I'm still in shock...it really was the most beautiful sight...once I could see what I was looking at! I'm only used to follicles and fibroids...

They were measuring a little off. One was 7w1d, hbpm 150. The other was 6w5d, hbpm 144. The peri didn't seem concerned. She said it could be as simple as ultrasound resolution, or placement, and that we were only talking about a millimeter or two. She also said it was completely normal for twins to measure a little differently. They each have their own sac, and are in the right spot. I'm breathing a huge sigh of relief. Office visit on Monday, and a repeat ultrasound three weeks from today. Whew! Tertia, are you laughing your ass off???

Meet the In-Laws

Obligatory dinner at the in-law's last night.

  1. Times MIL mentioned other grandchildren: 9 times
  2. Times MIL mentioned children in general: 7 times
  3. Times MIL brought up adoption: 6 times
  4. Times MIL pointed out that Asian boys at her church "seem to be Chinese," and isn't that unusual: 2 times
  5. Times MIL wondered why we didn't "just adopt," internationally: 2 times
  6. Times MIL mentioned IVF: 0 times

Well, the red cabbage was good, anyway, and she did ask me how my dogs were.
